Andy Murray’s wedding ring and tennis shoes have been recovered after they were stolen in California, putting him ‘back in the good books’ at home.

As a tradition, the three-time Grand Slam winner attaches his wedding band to the laces of his trainers when playing, but he hadn’t realised his costly error until it was too late.

‘Little update for everyone – would you believe it, they still absolutely stink but the shoes are back, the wedding ring is back and I’m back in the good books. Let’s go.’

Explaining the incident on his Instagram page on Wednesday, Murray said: ‘Last night after dinner I got back in the car to go back to the hotel and the car didn’t smell great.

‘So I decided when I got back to the hotel that the shoes needed some air, I needed to dry them out a little bit. I have no balcony in my room and I didn’t want to leave them in my room…
