Conor McGregor has praised both Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury after their incredible heavyweight showdown on Saturday night and taken a swipe at UFC rival Dustin Poirier at the same time.

Fury defended his WBC crown after a thrilling fight in Las Vegas, surviving two knockdowns in the fourth round to finally stop his American opponent with a brutal 11th round knockout that cements his status as the best heavyweight in the world.

MMA superstar McGregor was involved in his own trilogy fight back in July, which Poirier won after the Irishman broke his tibia in the first round, and he could not resist firing a dig at his long-time rival.

‘Great fight that. Both warriors, both winners,’ McGregor wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

‘Hard to not be impressed with Deontay there. Against the much larger man and almost got it done. Great fight. 40lbs in weight difference is A LOT.

‘Fair play both men there, very enjoyable fights they have had together. Respect.

‘Their skill levels are unique but very close. A great heavyweight trilogy that was.’

Taking aim at Poirier and clearly referencing what happened in their own trilogy fight, he continued: ‘I love when it gets set for certain and both have an honourable showing.

‘Not the fam in the ring fake celebrating after a freak injury etc etc you know the gig. God bless the real in this world.’

Turning back to the two heavyweights, he added: ‘Congrats Tyson and Paris. Me and Dee are so happy for you and the kids.
