Paul Ince believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lied to Donny van de Beek about his role within the Manchester United squad.

Van de Beek arrived from Dutch giants Ajax for a fee in the region of £35million last year but has failed to nail down a spot in the Norwegian’s starting XI, with Fred and Scott McTominay favoured on the majority of occasions.

The 24-year-old has played just six minutes of Premier League football so far this season, after starting just four top-flight matches across the whole of the 2020/21 campaign.

The former Ajax midfielder was linked with a potential transfer to fellow Premier League side Everton in the summer, but that move never materialised due to United’s desire to keep the player in their squad.

The former United star told the Kelly and Wrighty show: ‘If I’m going to buy a player, a top player from Ajax, the first thing I’m going to say is, “Am I going to play? Where do you see me fitting in, within the system, within the team?”

‘I can hold my hands up if I’m on the bench and the team are winning and playing well. You can’t tell me that Fred and McTominay are playing well week in and week out, and even [Paul] Pogba because they’re not.

‘But he seems to play them all the time, and I’m sitting there watching them play, I…
