Arsenal loanee William Saliba insists he made the right decision in choosing to move to Marseille as it is the club he ‘needed’.

The Gunners splashed out £27million to recruit the centre-back in 2019, but he is still yet to make his senior debut for the north London club.

Saliba spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Saint-Etienne, and when he arrived at the Emirates the following season, he failed to break into the first team under Mikel Arteta.

The 20-year-old was then sent another loan to Nice in January 2021, and now finds himself on his third loan spell at Marseille.

Saliba reportedly had the pick of a multitude of clubs to join in the summer and chose Marseille ahead of Newcastle United, Lille and a return to Nice.

Marseille sit in fifth place in Ligue 1 after eight games, and the defender is ecstatic with the choice he made.

‘We’ve done a big start to the season, even if the three last games haven’t been positive with two losses in Ligue 1,’ said Saliba, via L’Equipe.

‘We’re going to come back to try and win. I have been welcomed really well by my teammates and the fans.

‘For me, it’s a very good choice, it’s the club I needed, with a very good pressure.

‘At my age, it’s good to play in a stadium like that.’
