Mason Mount says it was a ‘special’ feeling to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, but insisted that there is still more to come from him.

Mount has been a regular starter for Chelsea over the last two seasons and played an instrumental role in helping the club to its second ever Champions League trophy last term.

The academy graduate has also become a mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s England team, and was a key member of the Three Lions squad during their European Championship campaign earlier this summer.

Mount was named on a 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award on Friday alongside global superstars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski, while fellow Chelsea teammates N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Cezar Azpilicueta and Romelu Lukaku also made the list.

The 22-year-old was left delighted by the nomination, owing it to his hard work and dedication to the sport.

‘Yeah it was special, I probably found out at the exact same time as everybody else,’ he told a press conference ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary.

‘To be alongside those names, it’s a dream. For all the years you work hard, and see that it shows that it pays off. But that’s just the start and it doesn’t stop now.’

When asked if he had a chance of winning the trophy, Mount said: ‘I doubt it but you never know, the most important thing for me is that I continue to hit the levels I’ve set before and go even further.

‘That’s always been my mentality and hopefully that continues.’
