Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun to go out on loan as he needs to ‘learn his trade’ by playing senior football more regularly.
The highly-rated 20-year-old was close to leaving the north London club in January but was convinced to stick around and sign a new deal by Mikel Arteta.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette out with Covid for this season’s Premier League opener against Brentford, Balogun made his debut in England’s top flight.
But since then, he has made just two senior appearances – substitute cameos in the league defeat to Chelsea and Carabao Cup victory over Wimbledon.
Meanwhile, the England Under-21 international has continued his rich vein of goalscoring form for Arsenal’s Under-23s, with six goals in four Premier League 2 games this term.
But in order for him to take the next step in his career, Campbell feels he needs to be sent on loan, and the ex-Gunners striker predicts that will happen next season.
‘Balogun needs to go out on loan and get some football,’ Campbell told Football Insider. ‘He needs to learn his trade.
‘Under-23s football is just too easy for him at the moment. He needs to go into the trenches. That is the only way he will learn about his game.
‘When you play against the defenders in the lower leagues, they have mortgages and families to look after. It’s serious. Whereas it is all hunky-dory in the Under-23s.
‘I’m [sure] he will go out and get that experience next year. Then he will realise his standard.’
