J.R. Smith shoots 83 then 78 in first golf rounds

The world’s most famous collegiate golfer got off to a strong start, but ultimately struggled in the first 36 holes of his North Carolina A&T career.

J.R. Smith, who joined the Aggies’ golf team as a walk-on earlier this year after a 16-year career in the NBA, shot a 12-over 83 and a 7-over 78 in the first two rounds of the Phoenix Invitational men’s golf tournament at Elon on Monday.

Per WKYC’s Tyler Carey, those scores left Smith last among Aggies golfers. NC A&T currently sits in 11th place out of 13.

The day made for a lesson learned for Smith, according to his coach:

“He found out today that collegiate golf is not easy,” said N.C. A&T coach Richard Watkins. “I thought he did well. We are pleased, but we are not pleased to the point of satisfaction. But I thought he had a good showing today.”

Smith reportedly qualified for the tournament by a single stroke.
