Manchester United have confirmed Raphael Varane will be out of action for ‘a few weeks’ after the defender sustained a groin injury while on international duty with France.

Varane lasted just 43 minutes of Sunday’s Nations League final between France and Spain as Didier Deschamps’ men came from behind to win 2-1 at the San Siro.

Replays showed Varane wincing as he raced back towards goal and the 28-year-old immediately gestured towards France’s medical staff that he would have to be replaced.

The centre-back – who swapped Real Madrid for Old Trafford in the summer transfer window – was subsequently pictured with an ice pack around his thigh as he watched the second half from the substitutes bench.

‘Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club,’ a statement on Manchester United’s website said on Tuesday afternoon.

‘He will be out for a few weeks.’

Varane made his United debut in the side’s 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Leeds back in August and has started every match since in the Premier League, impressing at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence.

His injury leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a selection headache ahead of the Red Devils’ trip to Leicester this weekend given club captain Harry Maguire is also a major doubt for the clash.

Victor Lindelof replaced Maguire for United’s games against Villarreal and Everton before the international break and is expected to continue his run in the team at the King Power Stadium.

Solskjaer could also call upon Eric Bailly or Phil Jones, while Scott McTominay also has experience of filling in at centre-half.
