Raheem Sterling is seeking assurances from Pep Guardiola over his Manchester City future before committing to talks over a new contract.

The 26-year-old has been an essential component of the sides which have dominated the Premier League since Guardiola’s appointment at the Etihad Stadium five years ago.

Sterling enhanced his reputation still further during the course of the summer when he was England’s player of the tournament en route to the final of Euro 2020, but he has featured only sporadically for the Premier League champions so far this season.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has started just four of City’s 11 matches so far this term, with his only goal coming in a 5-0 rout of Norwich back in August.

Jack Grealish’s arrival from Aston Villa, the emergence of Ferran Torres and Guardiola’s decision to deploy Gabriel Jesus on the flanks have all contributed to Sterling’s lack of game time.

According to The Sun, Sterling spoke with Guardiola recently about his situation but, despite vowing to give his all in a new central position, will not enter into fresh negotiations over a new contract until he is convinced he remains a key part of his manager’s plans.

Speaking after the forward’s last start – against Paris Saint-Germain on September 28 – boss Pep Guardiola said: ‘Raheem played really good as a striker against PSG. He created incredible spaces for all of us.

‘I’d say Raheem can play good on the right, like he did in the 100 points season, he played incredibly good on the left when we got 98 points.

‘And as a striker he always has the movements to create something for himself in front of the goal.’
