Manchester City are looking to steal a march on a number of their rivals by holding talks with Erling Haaland’s agent in January with a view to signing Europe’s most sought after striker in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund managed to keep hold of their prized asset in the summer after reluctantly parting company with Jadon Sancho and their faith in Haaland has been rewarded by the Norwegian’s outstanding start to the new season.

The Norwegian has scored an astonishing 16 goals in 11 matches for club and country already, enhancing his already burgeoning reputation.

City were desperate to sign a striker capable of replacing Sergio Aguero in the summer, but were thwarted in their attempts to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham after failing to agree a fee with their Premier League counterparts.

Mindful of Haaland’s £64m release clause, which will become active in June, City were not prepared to move for the 21-year-old during the close season, but are already positioning themselves ahead of making a renewed effort to strengthen an already formidable forward line.

According to The Times, City will open talks with Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola early in the New Year and are also hopeful that their existing relationship with kit manufacture Puma could play into their hands.

Spanish giants Real Madrid also maintain an interest, but it remains to be seen whether or not they possess the funds required to sign both Haaland and their principle target Kylian Mbappe who would command an enormous salary and signing on fee upon the expiration of his PSG contract.

Chelsea, meanwhile, opted to sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter having been priced out of a move for Haaland, while Manchester United, long-term admirers of Haaland’s, now…
