Newcastle United have an advantage if they push to sign Chelsea striker Timo Werner, according to reports in Germany.

The 25-year-old struggled to make an impact following his £47.5 million move from RB Leipzig last year, scoring just 12 goals in 52 appearances in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Due to an increased competition for places in attack following Romelu Lukaku’s return in the summer transfer window, Werner has struggled to secure a regular role in Chelsea’s attack this term, starting just three of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far.

It’s claimed that Newcastle United would step up their interest in Werner if he makes it clear that he wants to leave Stamford Bridge.

And Newcastle have an advantage as Werner shares the same agent as Fabian Schar, who is already at St James’ Park.

‘He’s in constant contact with the club and then with the management, which means the paths are short.

‘As soon as Werner gives a signal that he would like to leave Chelsea, Newcastle are definitely in the conversation.’

Bild also confirmed that Newcastle’s hierarchy have discussed a potential move for Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho.
