Sunderland have sacked manager Lee Johnson in the wake of a humiliating 6-0 defeat at Bolton. 

The 40-year-old, who arrived at the Stadium of Light in December 2020, has left the club with immediate effect alongside Assistant Head Coach Jamie McAllister.   

That loss saw them slip to third in League One and, while they remain only two points off top, sources say his dismissal is a result of a pattern of form over the last three months.

The 40-year-old leaves after 14 months in charge. He won the EFL Trophy last season but Sunderland were beaten in the semi-finals on the League One play-offs. The club are now looking for their 18th manager in less than 19 years.

 Sunderland have won just seven of their last 17 league matches since late October – even though Johnson won Manager of the Month in December – and owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: ‘We regret that we have had to take this decision, but felt immediate change was needed. 

‘We firmly believe that this is in the best interests of Sunderland AFC as we strive to earn promotion this season.’ 

‘Lee and Jamie will always be welcome at the Stadium of Light and they depart with our best wishes.’
