Conference championship season is off and running in women’s college golf, with all roads leading to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, next month.
Teams score an Automatic Qualifying spot in NCAA Regionals by winning their conference title. For the first time last season, a new rule was put into effect that guaranteed a spot in NCAA regional play for any individual who won the individual conference crown if her team didn’t also qualify.
Conference championships are listed below along with the date and venue, and we’ll continue to update the list with winners and storylines.
Big West Conference
Date: April 10-12
Host: San Luis Obispo Country Club (San Luis Obispo, California)
Cal Poly overcame a nine-shot deficit over the final six holes to force a one-hole playoff with Hawaii and ultimately claim the Big West Conference title for the second consecutive year. The Mustangs were led by freshman Kaylyn Noh, who won medalist honors at even par.
“We knew today was going to be tough,” said head coach Sofie Aagaard. “Hawai’i is a strong team with great ball strikers, handling wind very well. I knew that they weren’t going to lose the championship. Instead, we had to perform well and win it.”
Southeastern Conference
Date: April 13-15
Course: Greystone Golf Club (Birmingham, Alabama)
After losing in the semifinals in 2021, the Tigers won their first SEC Championship in 30 years after defeating Vanderbilt (4-1), Alabama (3.5-1.5) and Florida (4-1) in match play.
“Obviously it was an unbelievable week,” said head coach Garrett Runion. “When I think about this week, I really think about all the players before. The SEC has a slogan, ‘It Just Means More.’ It really does, so it makes me think about all the players before that helped us get to this point. We had a lot of former players calling and texting and coming out here. It was a great week that they will never forget. I certainly won’t.”
