Rich Strike, who had the longest odds at 80-1 before Saturday’s race, pulled away late to win the 148th Kentucky Derby.
The horse was only entered into the field on Friday after Ethereal Road was scratched.
Rich Strike started outside but charged down the stretch to pass the leaders and run the 1 1/4 mile in 2:02.61.
Rich Strike is only the second horse to win the Kentucky Derby from the 20th post position since the modern starting gate was introduced in 1930, joining Big Brown in 2008.
