Novak Djokovic falls to Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets


Novak Djokovic will not chase his third Monte Carlo title. The 24-time Major winner suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Alejandro Tabilo in an hour and 27 minutes in the second round. Thus, the Chilean secured another notable win over the Serb after beating him in Rome last year.

Novak arrived in Monte Carlo following the Miami Open final. The veteran experienced a viral infection in Florida and did his best to recover and prepare for Monte Carlo. However, he had low expectations ahead of the tournament, which proved to be the right call!

Tabilo collected 17 points more than Djokovic. The Chilean outplayed the legend behind the first and second serve. Alejandro denided two of three break points and kept the pressure on the other side. Novak served at only 54% and dropped 45% of the points in his games.

The 37-year-old played against eight break points and experienced three breaks to hit the exit door and drop points. Tabilo landed 16 winners and unforced errors. Unlike him, Djokovic sprayed too many mistakes, especially from his forehand.

Novak finished the duel on an 18-29 ratio, performing way below his best and suffering an early loss. The two-time winner followed the rival’s pace in the mid-range and most extended exchanges. However, he trailed in the short ones big time!

Djokovic hit only eight service winners and lost the edge from the baseline. The Serb took four straight points on the return in the first game of the match, landing a volley winner at the net and delivering an early break. A left-hander kept his composure. 

Tabilo pulled the break back in game two after Djokovic’s backhand error. The Chilean painted a forehand down the line winner in the third game and held at 15 two games later for…
