Martin Keown has identified what Arsenal defender Ben White needs to work on in order to take the ‘next step’ in his development.

The Gunners splashed out £50million in the summer to sign the 24-year-old from Brighton as part of their rebuild.

The north London side also brought in defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has formed a part of a back four alongside White, Gabriel and Kieran Tierney.

Arsenal’s legendary former defender Keown has been impressed by White so far, especially on the ball, but thinks there are a few key areas in which he can improve.

‘The partnership he’s formed with Gabriel, particularly Tomiyasu coming in and Tierney back in the back four, that is a really good back four with [Aaron] Ramsdale behind being outstanding,’ Keown told talkSPORT.

‘That is the base now, the platform that arsenal can go and build from.

‘When you look at Ben White in possession, the way he comes out with the ball, really confident, playing some superb passes.

‘The defensive side of it is where you want to look [at] and I think that’s improving.

‘And then it’s about forming where is the line, where is your opponent and where is the ball?

‘And also becoming a leader – that’s the next step.’

Arsenal face a Boxing Day clash against the Premier League’s bottom club Norwich on Sunday.

After a miserable start to the season, losing all three of their opening league fixtures, the Gunners now find themselves in fourth place in the table.
