Impressive Daniil Medvedev sweeps Juan Manuel Cerundolo


Daniil Medvedev came to Madrid with a mediocre 6-5 score in his previous five trips to Caja Magica. The Russian will play in the last 16 for the fourth straight time following a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Juan Manuel Cerundolo in 63 minutes.

Daniil skipped the first round and received a walkover from Laslo Djere in the second. Thus, he debuted in the Spanish capital against the Argentine and outplayed him on serve and return, playing flawless tennis and sailing over the top.

Medvedev provided seven comfortable holds, and Cerundolo failed to follow that pace. The 9th seed will seek his second consecutive Madrid Masters quarter-final against Brandon Nakashima.

The favorite collected 23 points more than his opponent. Medvedev played well behind the first and second serve, losing 12 points in eight service games and defending a lone break point in the second set to mount the pressure on the other side. 

Cerundolo served at 55% and plagued his chances. The Argentine gave away 52% of the points in his games and got broken four times from five opportunities presented to his rival. Daniil landed 18 winners and 19 unforced errors. 

He reduced Juan Manuel to ten direct points and 16 mistakes. Medvedev had the upper hand from the baseline and outplayed his rival at the net. The Russian made a strong start and fired a forehand winner in the first game of the encounter for an early advantage.

The 9th seed cemented the lead with a forehand winner in game two and landed a service winner at 2-1 to remain in front. Juan Manuel secured a fine hold in game five and remained within one break deficit. Medvedev grabbed the sixth game after the rival’s error.
