Daniil Medvedev embraces clay challenges: 'Rome win still fuels m

Daniil Medvedev will compete in the Madrid Masters fourth round for the fourth straight time. The Russian needed only 63 minutes to find himself in the last 16 in Caja Magica. Daniil skipped the first round and received a walkover in the second.

Medvedev faced Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the third round and secured a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory in just over an hour. Daniil feels confident about his level on clay, especially after conquering the Rome Masters two years ago.

While he would have liked to face Laslo Djere in the second round, the Russian did not make a big deal of it. He embraced two training sessions that day and felt good about passing an obstacle without facing his rival.

Medvedev played at a high level against Cerundolo and outplayed his rival on serve and return. The Russian served well and kept the pressure on the other side, taking 23 points more than his opponent. The 9th seed lost 12 points in his games and saved the only break point.

Juan Manuel could not follow that pace and make the duel more interesting. The Argentine landed in only 55% of the first serve and lost over half of the points in his games. Medvedev generated five break points and seized four to sail over the top.

Daniil tamed his strokes nicely and hit 18 winners and 19 unforced errors. The Russian had the upper hand from the baseline and at the net, constructing the points nicely and producing a high-quality tennis. Medvedev landed a forehand winner in the first game and clinched an early break.
