Lorenzo Musetti edges Stefanos Tsitsipas


Lorenzo Musetti and Stefanos Tsitsipas met for the second time at a notable clay-court event this spring. Like in Monte Carlo, Musetti emerged at the top in Madrid, ousting the Greek 7-5, 7-6 in an hour and 54 minutes. 

With these points, Lorenzo has moved even closer to a top-10 spot after the fourth Masters 1000 event. Stefanos led 30 at the beginning of the duel and created three break chances in game seven. Musetti denied them and performed a comeback. 

The Italian rattled off four games from 3-5 to steal the opener and gain confidence. Tsitsipas denied break points in the closing stages of the second set before losing the tie break and hitting the exit door. 

Lorenzo collected nine points more than Stefanos. The Greek served at 57% and sprayed six double faults. However, he fought well and defended six of eight break points. Musetti struggled behind the second serve and played against five break points. 

He saved four and grabbed the pivotal points to emerge at the top and enter the last 16. The Italian hit 22 winners and 20 unforced errors. He tamed his strokes nicely and left his opponent on a 28-39 ratio, with Stefanos missing too many forehands.

Musetti outplayed his rival in service winners and from the baseline. Tsitsipas reduced the gap with a strong performance at the net, although it was not enough to keep him in contention. The Greek held in the opening game of the match and made a push on the return in the next one.

Lorenzo sent a forehand drive-volley long to lose serve and experience an early setback. The former finalist landed a winner at the net in the fifth game and forged a 4-1 advantage. Musetti faced more issues on serve in the sixth game.
