Tom Thibodeau expected to return to Knicks next season
The Knicks suffered three straight brutal losses prior to the All-Star break.
Some time after that losing streak, sources say, Knicks owner James Dolan communicated to Leon Rose that any decision made on Tom Thibodeau’s future was up to Rose.
It was clear then that finances wouldn’t be a factor in any decision Rose had to make on Thibodeau, as noted on SNY’s The Putback.
Thibodeau has at least one guaranteed season remaining on his five-year contract. Eating the money would not be an issue to Dolan.
According to a report from Bleacher Report on Wednesday, Rose will not fire Thibodeau at season’s end. The report stated that Thibodeau will coach the team at the start of the 2022-23 season and noted that Dolan gave Rose the leeway to make the decision.
This was not independently confirmed by SNY but several sources familiar with the dynamic around the club expected Thibodeau to be back next season.
The Knicks entered play Wednesday at 28-40, 5.5 games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the 10th seed in the East. The club has taken a step back from last season’s success. New York finished 2020-21 at 41-31 and in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Thibodeau won the NBA’s Coach of the Year Award.
