Alize Cornet gives thoughts on French Open crowd booing her for retiring injured

French tennis player Alize Cornet was disappointed in the Roland Garros after she was booed following her French Open third round retirement. Cornet, who defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the French Open second round, was struggling with a thigh issue during the Ostapenko match but managed to close out the match.

On Saturday, Cornet came out on the courth with both of her thighs heavily strapped. Cornet made the decision to play but she was clearly nowhere near her best as Zheng Qinven led 6-0 3-0 before the local player decided to retire.

Even though Cornet attemped to play and retired after it was evident that she was heavily affected by the injury, the Roland Garros crowd wasn’t happy to see retire the match.

Cornet: I gave my best and got booed

“I had to abandon the match because I was in pain.

But sometimes the French audience surprises me and not always in the right way. Most of the people are no doubt sad for me and understand what’s happening but this handful of idiots really makes you feel bad,” Cornet said, per Tennis Up To Date.

“The boos hurt more than the injury itself. It was just a handful of people in the stadium so maybe they made a lot of noise. But it’s really too much when you see everything I’ve been giving on the court for so many years.

It was my decision whether I played today or not. But you know me, I would never have backed out or abandoned a game in a Grand Slam. So it wasn’t possible for me to not try to give it my all today.” Earlier this year, Cornet reached her maiden Australian Open quarterfinal.

Had Cornet defeated Zheng, she would have clashed top-seeded Iga Swiatek in the French Open last-16. Hopefully Cornet recovers in time for the grass season.
