Aston Villa’s game against Burnley has become the sixth Premier League fixture to be postponed due to Covid-19 this weekend after being called off just two hours and twenty minutes before kick-off.

The West Midlands side announced on social media that the game had been postponed after the club had recorded more positive Covid-19 test results within the squad overnight

The fixture had been the only remaining 3pm fixture on Saturday but the Covid outbreak among the Villa squad forced the game to be called off just over two hours before kick off.

Further positive results received on Saturday morning left Steven Gerrard’s squad too depleted for the game to go ahead.

The club acknowledged and apologised for the late notice of the postponement but insisted they acted as quickly as they could.

A statement on Villa’s official website said: ‘Aston Villa can confirm that today’s Premier League fixture with Burnley has been postponed due to an increased amount of positive Covid-19 test results within our playing squad.

‘The results of PCR tests, which were taken yesterday prior to training as well as Lateral Flow Tests, were received this morning and confirmed further depletion of our playing squad which was already impacted upon for our trip to Norwich in midweek.

‘All individuals who tested positive are now isolating in line with Premier League and government guidance and protocols.
