1996 Australian Open doubles champion Chanda Rubin is praying to see Emma Raducanu fit for the Australian Open. Raducanu, 20, spent the entire offseason working hard in the gym as her top priority was to get stronger for the 2023 season.
Then in her first tournament of the season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, Raducanu rolled her ankle and was forced to retire her round-of-16 match. The latest reports say that Raducanu has decided to go to Melbourne but her Australian Open status remains up in the air.
“Hopefully, it’s not something major that requires months and months of rehab but it is so frustrating, especially at this early stage. Hopefully, she can build physically and get back as quickly as possible,” Rubin said of Raducanu on Tennis Channel.
Rubin, Prakash Amritraj on Raducanu
Last year, Raducanu was mightily struggling with injuries and physical setbacks. Unfortunately, Raducanu’s 2023 season got off on the wrong way. “She [Raducanu] thrust into the highest level of events and she had to play that all year round.
There is the physical stress, mental stress, emotional stress, all of which comes out in the body and perhaps it’s just still getting used to and spending a lot more time getting the body ready. Right now in Australia, she won’t have too much time.
Ten days away, she’s got to be ready,” Amritraj said. Raducanu made a solid start to the season as she recovered from a set and a break down to beat Czech tennis sensation Linda Fruhvirtova in the Auckland first round.
In the Auckland round-of-16, Raducanu won the first set against Viktoria Kuzmova with a 6-0 score. Raducanu then rolled her ankle late in the second set as Kuzmova won the set with a 7-5 score. Before the start of the third set, Raducanu retired the match and left the court in tears. It remains to be seen if Raducanu will be fit enough to play the Australian Open.
