Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka has revealed that she will return to action at the Indian Wells Masters. Osaka last played at the Australian Open, where she suffered a surprise third round defeat to Amanda Anisimova. Osaka held a Q&A session on Instagram, where she answered to one of the questions that Indian Wells will be her next tournament.
Osaka was also asked what she does for fun. “I’m doing a lot of things right now. I am the type of person that always has to have projects going on, I just never tell anyone what I’m doing until it comes out.
Mainly reading a lot during this time though,” Osaka wrote.
Osaka surprised by Anisimova
Anisimova recovered from a set down to beat Osaka 4-6 6-3 7-6 (5) and prevent the Japanese from defending her Australian open title.
“I thought her return was definitely really amazing,” Osaka said after the loss. “I almost felt like I was fighting for my life out there in some games. I honestly also thought that I won certain games just based on sheer willpower.
“It’s kind of interesting when you’re playing against someone, you feel like you want to learn from them, as well. Because I also feel like I want to return the way that she returns. So I’m definitely going to go to the practice court and try to practice my returns – maybe not tomorrow but whenever.
It was an exciting match for me. I hope everyone else that was watching it was thrilled.” Osaka didn’t play any events after suffering a surprise third round loss at the US Open. Osaka returned to action in Australia as she started her season at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.
Osaka made the Melbourne Summer Set semifinal before giving a walkover to Veronika Kudermetova. Osaka wasn’t injured but her body needed a bit of rest as it was her first tournament in four months.
