The Australian Open 2022 may have made headlines around the world as a result of Novak Djokovic’s visa saga, but now the tournament is underway all eyes are on the action on the court.

Many have high hopes for Britain’s 19-year-old Emma Radacanu, who became the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam last year – and both she and Andy Murray have kept British hopes alive after reaching the second round of the event.

As one of the major tournaments, there is of course a big prize in store for the winner – but just how much does the winner stand to get?

Here’s what you need to know…

What is the Australian Open prize money?

The prize for winning the Australian Open is the same for both the mens’ and womens’ singles champion – with both pocketing $2.8m Australian dollars (around £1.5m).

The runner-up of each will win $1.5mAUS (around £794,000).

The total prize pot for the tournment stands at a record £39.6m in total – which also includes the money paid out to those who are knocked out in the earlier stages of the competition.

That means this year’s winner will go home with £800,000 more than Novak Djokovic did when he was the men’s singles winner in 2021.

The winners of the doubles and mixed doubles rounds are also set to benefit.

The mens’ and womens’ doubles winners will each take home $675,000AUS (£357,000) while the Mixed Doubles winners prize is $190,000AUS (£100,000).
