Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac may have won together the Paris Olympics mixed doubles competition but still the biggest story wasn’t the actual win but they doing that after breaking up as a couple.
After starting their relationship in 2020, Siniakova, 23, and 28-year-old Machac decided to go their separate ways as a couple sometime before the Paris Olympics.
Naturally, that instantly led to some concerns if the two would still play and how it would all look.
“Yes, it’s true, but this is my private matter. Of course we will play, we are professionals,” Siniakova said before the Olympics.
And after keeping their word and still playing together, Siniakova and Machac ended up claiming the gold medal after winning their first three matches in straight sets before also beating China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen 6-2 5-7 10-8 in the final.
Siniakova teases reporters: We like when you are confused…
After their win, Siniakova and Machac were asked if they were still dating.
“That’s our personal life, so you don’t need to know that. We like when you are confused,” Siniakova cheekily said.
Machac then added: “This is top secret.”
Then, both Siniakova and Machac got serious as Siniakova highlighted that they were two professional players who had a clear goal in their minds.
“We are professionals and knew we could work together on the court, regardless of what happened before,” Siniakova said.
Machac pretty much repeated the same as Siniakova.
“We wanted to win for our country, and we achieved it together,” Machac added.
Siniakova, who is currently ranked at No. 2 in women’s doubles, now has two Olympic titles – she previously won the gold medal with Barbora Krejcikova at the Tokyo Olympics.
On the other side, this was Machac’s first Olympic appearance and therefore his first Olympic medal.
