Joao Fonseca sails past Elmer Moller

A year after becoming the youngest match winner in tournament’s history, Joao Fonseca is off to a winning start in Madrid. The young Brazilian faced the Dane Elmer Moller 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 13 minutes in the first round.

Fonseca served at 70% and made the difference with his first serve. A teenager lost 18 points in eight service games and never faced a break point. Moller felt the pressure and cracked under it. He dropped almost half of the points in his games.

Joao generated 13 break chances and converted four, controlling the scoreboard and moving over the top.

Fonseca landed 16 winners and 25 unforced errors. He left Moller on a 10-28 ratio, with the Dane spraying too many errors from his backhand. Joao forged a 22-10 advantage in service winners, using his initial shot nicely and making the difference.

Elmer struggled on serve in the opening set and played against 11 break points! He defended nine but still suffered two breaks to fall behind. The Brazilian made a push in the third game of the encounter and created three break chances.

Joao seized the third with a deep return, causing the rival’s mistake and forging the advantage. A teenager fired a forehand down the line winner in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead and made another push on the return in the next one.

Moller played against three break points, defending them and remaining within one break deficit after a forehand down the line winner. Fonseca secured the sixth game with a forehand crosscourt winner and mirrored that in the next one for a break point.
