Nigel de Jong doesn’t think Manchester United will finish in the Champions League places this season and is backing Arsenal or West Ham to seal fourth spot.

United have gone unbeaten in Ralf Rangnick’s first four games in charge at Old Trafford, but they are yet to impress under the German.

The interim boss has overseen two 1-0 wins and two 1-1 draws, with the latest an uninspiring showing against Newcastle in which Edinson Cavani came off the bench to rescue a point.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea look set to compete for the title this season, although Pep Guardiola’s side have opened up a six-point gap at the top.

However, fourth place looks like it could be up for grabs, with Arsenal occupying the position heading into the New Year.

Behind the Gunners in fifth are West Ham, while sixth-placed Tottenham and seventh-placed United have two games in hand.

By the business end of the season, former City midfielder De Jong thinks United will fall short and Arsenal and the Hammers will be the two teams battling for fourth.

‘I don’t see Man United finishing in fourth this season, even if they’re currently favourites behind Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea to do so; I really don’t. I think it’ll be a battle between Arsenal and West Ham,’ said De Jong, speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Arsenal v Man City.

‘Arsenal are doing well, but there’s still a long way to go this season; I’m not sure they can sustain this form for the duration of the season. That being said, they don’t have to worry about European football so they have very little in the way of distractions over the next few months.
