Carlos Alcaraz bests Laslo Djere in straight sets

Carlos Alcaraz is safely through into the Barcelona Open quarter-final. The two-time champion faced Laslo Djere in the second round and earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in an hour and 11 minutes. Thus, Alcaraz extended his winning streak following his Monte Carlo title.

They met for the first time in over two years, and Carlos had the upper hand on serve and return. World no. 2 claimed 21 points more than his opponent. He served at 71% and defended two of three break points, sending the pressure to the other side.

Djere could not follow that pace. The Serb dropped half of the points in his games and got broken four times from six chances presented to his rival. Laslo wasted a 4-2 lead in the second set and allowed Carlos to rattle off four games.

Carlos hit 15 winners and 17 unforced errors. He tamed his strokes nicely and left Laslo on a poor 8-27 ratio. The lower-ranked player could not find his range from a backhand wing, spraying too many mistakes and ending his campaign in the second round.

Alcaraz had the upper hand in service winners and from the baseline, playing well and sealing the deal without issues. Djere produced a fine hold at the beginning of the duel, which changed at 1-1. Carlos provided the rival’s backhand error for a break at love and an early advantage. 

The Spaniard drew the rival’s mistake in the next one and cemented the lead. Alcaraz made another push on the return in game five and cracked a forehand down the line winner for a break and a 4-1 advantage. Laslo created two break points in the sixth game.
