Carlos Alcaraz downs Alex de Minaur, reaches SF

Carlos Alcaraz is through to his third consecutive Barcelona Open semi-final. The top seed faced Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final and scored a 7-5, 6-3 victory in an hour and 39 minutes. Thus, the Spaniard toppled the Aussie for the fourth time from as many duels.

Three years ago, Alex wasted two match points against Carlos in the semi-final. The Spaniard avoided a similar scare in the their most recent duel, overcoming the deficit in the opener and moving over the top with a single break in the second set.

Thus, the two-time Barcelona Open winner notched his 13th straight victory at one of his favorite events, lifting trophies in 2022 and 2023 before missing the tournament last year.

De Minaur served at 52% and sprayed six double faults. He struggled behind the first and second serve. He gave away 45% of the points in his games and suffered four breaks from eight chances presented to his opponent. 

Alcaraz struggled behind the second serve. He lost serve  two times in the opening set and kept the pressure on the other side in the second. World no. 2 landed 16 winners and 34 unforced errors. De Minaur hit ten winners and 33 mistakes, missing equally from both wings.

Carlos hit more service winners, while they stayed in touch from the baseline. De Minaur saved a break point in the second game of the duel and clinched a break in the next one after Alcaraz’s careless forehand. Alex landed a service winner in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead. 

The Spaniard stepped in on the return in the sixth game and fired a forehand winner to clinch a break at love and lock the result at 3-3. The Aussie notched another break in the seventh game after passing his rival at the net.
