Carlos Alcaraz is the Monte Carlo Masters champion! Competing at the first Masters 1000 clay-court event of the season, Alcaraz ousted injured Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 60 in an hour and 47 minutes for his sixth Masters 1000 crown at 21.
The Spaniard had to wait for it for over a year after conquering the previous one in Indian Wells last year. World no. 3 did not play at his best during his second visit to the Principality. However, he did enough to oust five rivals and lift a trophy, his second of the season.
Musetti fought in his first Masters 1000 final. He made a promising start and clinched the opener before fading from the court. The Italian struggled with a right thigh injury, requiring a medical timeout in the decider and finishing as the runner-up.

Alcaraz denied seven of nine break points, losing serve two times in the opener and sending the pressure to the other side from set number two. Lorenzo dropped half of the points in his games and got broken five times in sets two and three.
The Spaniard attacked and tamed his strokes nicely. He had the upper hand in the shortest and mid-range rallies, taking charge against an injured opponent and bringing the victory home in style. Carlos is the new ATP Race leader with these 1000 ATP points.
He will also pass Alexander Zverev on Monday and become world no. 2 and Jannik Sinner’s closest rival.
