WWE Recruitment Evolution: Dave Meltzer Insights

Women’s wrestling in the last ten years has completely transformed. It was largely due to WWE’s “Women’s Revolution” and the performers that spearheaded this change. The future of women’s wrestling looks bright as WWE continues to evolve their recruitment strategies.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about how WWE has changed their approach to recruiting female wrestlers over the years and what kind of talent it has resulted in. “In five years, [WWE is] gonna be loaded with these women that are in NXT,” said Meltzer.
He mentioned that historically speaking, women working in a professional wrestling ring have never been at the same athletic level as men but WWE is starting to fix this by trying to sign athletes who are already at an elite level.
“On independents, you’re not gonna get the great athletes that you get when you recruit great athletes like WWE does,” he said. However, up until recently, World Wrestling Entertainment had chosen females based on what they looked like rather than their ability to be inside a squared circle.
Appearance and Athleticism
Meltzer continued by saying appearance still matters greatly when being recruited by WWE but there are now other factors including athleticism. Now, both genders from all walks of life such as college/professional sports backgrounds and independent pro wrestling scene can be signed by them so that they may build more diverse rosters filled with competitors who possess better physical gifts.
“They’re not all gonna make it,” Meltzer noted but expressed positive outlooks for many talents: “There’ll be flops because there always [are], but they’re gonna have a lot of [success]”.
