“I had no expectations for Wimbledon”

Elena Rybakina was the biggest surprise of Wimbledon 2022. The young Kazakh tennis player hit the big target at her very first appearance in a Grand Slam final, getting rid of the former world number 1 Simona Halep in the semifinal and the current one in the path number 2 Ons Jabeur, defeat in comeback in the tournament final played on Saturday 9 July 2022.
In the aftermath of her great success at the Championships, Rybakina granted an interview to the official website of the WTA, in which she described with emotion the path that she has led to this goal. She told: “We worked hard, it was very complicated months due to injuries.
I was sick, I didn’t prepare well for Wimbledon, so I relaxed a bit, I had no expectations. In fact, I was already thinking about the future, preparing the US tour. I have been very relaxed in this tournament which helped me get into week two, although in the last few days I was a little more nervous, thinking about how close I was to the final.
I really enjoyed these days, plus I was able to be with my sister, whom I hadn’t seen for many months.”
Rybakina: “I thought I didn’t know how to play on grass”
Continuing the story, Elena Rybakina even confessed that she did not feel capable of being competitive on grass.
The court, however, in the end said something else. She said: “Before I started playing my first professional grass tournaments, I thought I was not able to play well here because I only had the experience of the junior stage.
Then I came here, I trained for two days and then I had to play the first game. Obviously, I didn’t have any confidence. On my first grass tour, I remember starting ‘s-Hertogenbosch by playing well, my coach kept telling me I had the grass game, that I just had to believe it.
Last year I lost here in the fourth round, it was tough, then I thought I had the confidence to play on grass, but this year was completely different. This year I came with very few games before Wimbledon.” …
