Cori Gauff reveals there is a chance she could start working with Serena Williams’ childhood coach Rick Macci. Gauff has established herself as one of the best players in the game but she has a hard time beating the top players in the latter stages of tournaments.
In May, coach Macci identified Gauff’s forehand as a liability that top players usually easily expose. At the time, coach Macci also claimed he could fix Gauff’s forehand. “I haven’t spoken to Rick personally. But, yes, him and my dad converse a lot.
Not just now but over the years. Yeah, that was one of the options to do that after the season is over. Obviously, it’s far from now, so I can’t really confirm. But, yeah, I believe, based off what you told me, everything is true,” Gauff said.
Gauff could start working with Macci
Macci was famously the childhood coach of Serena and Venus Williams as he is widely credited for the early development of the Williams sisters.
Macci, who is now 68 years old, is always looking for a new challenge and he believes he could help Gauff elevate her game to a new level. “Maybe Coco Gauff, because I know her dad and I know that I can fix that forehand and make it one of her biggest assets.
Right now, there is a hole there and under pressure it bubbles up. She needs to take some time off and in a couple of months, I have to put that whole thing together and reverse engineer it and reprogram her reflexes. Because there are 10-12 years of muscle memory, it’s not bad but it is a liability when she is under pressure.
She’s a good kid with great foot speed, she is an Olympic sprinter with a racket in her hand, she has a tremendous serve, I would tweak the serve a bit,” Macci told Sportskeeda in May. It will be interesting to see if Gauff indeed turns to coach Macci for help.
