Barcelona target Man Utd’s Anthony Martial as plan B to Ferran Torres move

Barcelona are weighing up a move for Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, although Manchester City star Ferran Torres remains their first choice to bolster their forward line.

The Catalan giants have been unusually open about their interest in Torres, who has been out since the middle of October with a broken bone in his foot.

Barca vice-president Rafael Yuste confirmed reports that club officials have been in contact with City over a possible move, telling AS: ‘Ferran is a great player and we are working with discretion.

‘We have friends at Manchester City and there is good relationship. [CEO] Ferran Reverter has paid a courtesy call.

‘I understand the questions but, out of respect for the players and the clubs, we cannot give expectations that could end up being positive or negative.’

Whether that deal can be done or not is yet to be seen as Torres has impressed at City since his £20m move from Valencia in the summer of 2020, so the Premier League champions would expect a lot more than that for him, while Barcelona’s financial woes have been widely reported.

However, Mundo Deportivo report that Torres is very keen on the move to Barca and has even asked Pep Guardiola to facilitate the switch.

Mundo Deportivo also report that Barcelona are considering Martial as another option in the January transfer window, with the Frenchman having fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United.

Barca have long been a fan of the 25-year-old and with his game time limited at Old Trafford believe they could even secure a loan deal in January for the rest of the season, especially as Martial would like game time to boost his chances of making France’s World Cup squad.
