Cameron Norrie reflects on surprise Stefanos Tsitsipas win

World No. 12 Cameron Norrie felt he executed his game plan well against Stefanos Tsitsipas as he has progress into the Acapulco final. Norrie, seeded at No. 6, defeated third-seeded Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4 in the Acapulco semifinal.

Norrie will be fighting against No. 4 seed Rafael Nadal for the Acapulco title. “In general, [I hit] my forehand very loopy, my backhand very flat,” Norrie said after the match, per the ATP website. “I was able to dictate play to his backhand and defend my forehand quite well.

I definitely felt that better in the second set, and I think my game is pretty good in these conditions.”

Norrie overcomes Tsitsipas in straight sets

The first break point of the match was seen in the ninth game, when Norrie broke Tsitsipas to take a 5-4 lead.

After claiming the first break of the match in the ninth game, Norrie routinely served out for the first set in the following game. Tsitsipas had his first break point chance in the sixth game of the second set but Norrie saved it to level the set at three games apiece.

Tsitsipas paid the price for not realizing a break point in the sixth game as Norrie collected the first break of the set in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead. Norrie then realized his first match point in the following game to complete a surprise win over Tsitsipas.

“[My serve] really got me into the match and I was able to relax and was able to execute on the big points,” Norrie said, admitting to some early nerves on the stadium court. Norrie is now a win away from winning his second ATP title of the season.

Last week, Norrie won the Delray Beach Open after beating Reilly Opelka in the final. Nadal won the Acapulco title in 2020 but didn’t defend his title last year. It remains to be seen if Norrie can pull off an upset and beat Nadal.
