Daniil Medvedev slams his own ‘crazy’ on-court behaviour as mind games help him

Daniil Medvedev says he’s ‘not happy’ with how he behaved during his Australian Open win over Maxime Cressy.

The No.1 seed took three and a half hours to overcome the world No.70 in four sets to set up a quarter-final meeting with Felix Auger Aliassime.

But Cressy’s style of play clearly got under the Russian’s skin as he complained to the umpire about the time taken between his opponent’s first and second serves.

He also shouted: ‘This is so boring!’ with the American’s serve and volley tactics working a treat as well as accusing his opponent of being lucky for finding the lines, saying: ‘It’s simply unbelievable how lucky he is getting. I’ve never seen anything like this in my whole life.’

Medvedev attempted to explain his actions in his on-court interview with mind games appearing to be the reason for his outbursts.

‘Yeah I mean the fourth set was crazy because every time I had a break point, many times he would have a second serve – and he did a few double faults today – and it would be [on the] line so I wouldn’t even be able to like return it,’ he said.

‘I’m sure he didn’t want to touch the line, he would want to go a little bit like into me, and it touches the line and I’m like “when will this end?” The time when I said it, my ball touched the net and went on my side and I was like “really, again?”‘

The 25-year-old later appeared to regret his actions as he insisted the most important thing was not to give up having lost the third-set tie-breaker.

‘To be honest I agree it was a great match and it’s just during the match I got a little bit crazy, I think with myself,’ he added in his interview with Eurosport.

‘I even went a little bit, I don’t want to say the surname but…
