Dele Alli’s future at Tottenham has been thrown into doubt after the midfielder was left out of Spurs’ squad to face Burnley in the EFL Cup.
The 25-year-old was a prominent fixture for Nuno Espirito Santo in his opening months at the club, with Alli starting Spurs’ first six Premier League fixtures this term.
However, Alli was subbed at half-time in Spurs’ dismal 3-0 defeat to rivals Arsenal earlier this month and he’s not played a single minute in the Premier League since.
The EFL Cup looked to be a good opportunity for Alli to fight for his way back into the side but the Daily Mail report that he’s not part of the travelling squad for tonight’s game.
Alli is not injured and his exclusion raises serious doubts after his future in north London.
The midfielder has suffered a dramatic loss in form over the last two years and was left out of England’s Euro2020 squad, having been such a prominent member of the World Cup squad in 2018.
Alli’s omission is all the more surprising after Nuno promised to treat the Burnley game like a ‘final’.
Asked whether he would be taking his Premier League squad to Burnley, Spurs boss Nuno replied: ‘Basically yes, but we have players that we need, players that are working hard, maybe with the expectation that they will have more minutes, the expectation that they deserve more minutes.
‘It’s going to be a tough match like we expect because Burnley is a good team but it’s a good chance for us to improve, knowing that the Carabao Cup is an important competition for us. We have to go game-by-game and then this game is a final.’
