Liverpool remain confident of bringing Fabio Carvalho to Anfield this summer after missing out on a deadline day deal for the Fulham teenager.

After hours of discussions with the Championship club on Monday evening about the terms of a transfer, the Reds thought they had secured a move for the 19-year-old, who has scored seven goals in 20 appearances so far this campaign. But time ran out before a move could completed, with the EFL not using the deal sheets system which operates in the Premier League to allow prospective transfers extra time to be completed.

The Reds were believed to be willing to pay in the region of £5m for Carvalho, who is out of contract this summer and able to leave Craven Cottage for free. One of the key terms of the deal was that Carvalho would remain on loan with Marco Silva’s side for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Now, though, the Reds can negotiate with the player directly without having to go through his club. Carvalho is free to sign a contract with any other side, and Liverpool will surely be in pole position having already convinced the player and his family that a move to the North West was best for his development.

If Carvalho were to move to a non-English club, Fulham would receive a nominal fee in compensation. However, if Carvalho were to sign with the Reds or any other English club, a tribunal would take place in order to determine a fair figure Fulham should be paid for developing and training the player in his career so far.

Liverpool and Fulham went through that exact process in 2019 when the Reds agreed a contract with Harvey Elliott. On that occasion the tribunal settled on a price of £4.3m, which already seems like a bargain for a player who began the campaign as a first choice midfielder in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven prior to suffering a serious ankle injury away at Leeds United.
