
Senior Manchester United players sent text messages to Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take responsibility for the embarrassing defeat to Liverpool and ‘express their support’ for the under-fire manager.
20-time English champions United suffered one of their worst defeats in living memory last weekend, losing 5-0 at home to arch-rivals Liverpool.
Liverpool dominated the Red Devils and led 4-0 at half-time, with thousands of home fans leaving Old Trafford long before the game was finished.
Solskjaer’s job appeared to be on the line following the demoralising setback but the Norwegian boss received messages of support from his squad in the aftermath of Liverpool’s emphatic victory.
ESPN say many senior players are still fully behind Solskjaer and contacted the manager – and Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward – on Monday to express their support.
It is claimed players told Woodward that their own poor form had contributed to the team’s struggles, in a clear show of support to Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho as Red Devils manager in December 2018.
Solskjaer will be in charge of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but another defeat could spell the end for the 48-year-old.
Former England striker Alan Shearer has warned Solskjaer that his status as a Man Utd legend will not prevent him from being sacked if the team’s poor form continues.
‘What you might get as a former player managing your club is an extra two or three games or a chance more than anyone else might do,’ Shearer told Que Golazo.
