Paul Merson believes a Champions League qualifying spot is Arsenal’s to lose given their impressive run of form and the relative struggles of their closest rivals in the table.

The Gunners were bottom of the table following a disastrous start to the season which saw them lose three consecutive matches after spending £160million on new recruits in the summer.

Gradually, Mikel Arteta has rebuilt confidence and a young, emerging team built around the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard has delivered some impressive results in recent weeks.

Indeed, Arsenal have won their last four games heading into Sunday’s match against Leicester City and currently sit in fourth place with games in hand over their nearest competitors in the table.

Arteta’s side still have to play the likes of Spurs, Manchester United, West Ham and Chelsea before the end of the campaign, but Merson is confident his old team will get the job done and return to Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in five years.

‘A top-four finish is definitely Arsenal’s to lose,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘They’ve got the games in hand, and while it is not the easiest fixture list in the world, they are playing really well.

‘They do have to play Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs, but they are in form.’

‘They still have to get the job done in the games we expect them to win, but they are in a great position.’

Arsenal scored three sensational goals last week at Vicarage Road last week but nearly undid their good work in attack with some uncharacteristically charitable defending.

Merson added: ‘It’s hard to play entertaining football like Arsenal did at Watford and not let in goals at the other end.
