Former Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar, 31, dies in rock climbing accident along with female friend

Ex-Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar died Wednesday in a fatal rock climbing accident as he tried to scale a mountainside near Idyllwild, California. 

Escobar was climbing with another person, identified as 33-year-old Chelsea Walsh.

And the pair was fatally injured near the Tahquitz Peak Fire Lookout, within the San Bernardino National Forest, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. 

Rescuers were called around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to Tahquitz Rock near Idyllwild following a distress call, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said on Twitter.

A team managed to climb into the steep, remote area and found both climbers dead at the scene, the department said.

A small amount of rain fell in the area earlier in the day, but officials didn´t immediately say if weather was a factor in the deaths.

The ex-NFL athlete was just 31 years old. The victims were fatally injured at about 12:20pm, according to officials, and were reached by firefighters by 1:20pm, after two witnesses called 911.

They were pronounced dead at the scene. Tahquitz Peak has been a popular destination with climbers and Walsh had previously posted on her own Instagram about scaling the rock.

Tahquitz Rock, with its steep granite cliffs, is a popular destination for climbers.

Citing the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press said two climbers from Los Angeles fell 200 feet (60 meters) to their deaths on the rock in 2000.
