John Cena recently spoke about the possibility of a WWE centric movie and commended two films for getting that wrestling world correct. Cena joined Jeff Goldblum on “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” and during their chat, he spoke about what it’s like to tell wrestling stories on the big screen.
Filmmakers have approached this subject from many angles over the years with some movies being comedic and others very serious. He mentioned two specific films “The Wrestler” and “The Iron Claw” for knocking out wrestling narratives.
“Movies about wrestling, they are a tough subject matter to tackle,” Cena said. “Movies like ‘The Wrestler’ and movies like ‘The Iron Claw’ have done a really good job in telling the story of the individuals.
It is such a larger-than-life thing, and there are so many memorable names”.
Authentic Wrestling Narratives
“The Wrestler” is a fictional tale about a once-great wrestler who wants his life back while fighting through his past mistakes.
This movie was inspired by Jake Roberts among others. The other film is “The Iron Claw,” which tells the tragic yet inspiring story of Texas greats The Von Erich Family. These movies resonated with fans because they were very authentic portrayals of real-life characters in pro wrestling.
They also told complicated stories within an industry where people often portray themselves as larger-than-life characters every week. “‘Iron Claw’ is about four marquee players in Texas,” Cena explained.
“The Wrestler’ is the story of a marquee player who has passed his prime and what he’s trying to do in collectively trying to pick up the pieces of his own life. It’s that rock star not being able to step off the stage story”.
Cena has seen those films made well so he knows how great pro wrestling can be as cinema when done right with its rich history. A lot of fans hope to see more movies like this made. John Cena sees so much potential in the WWE library alone…
