Glen Johnson has backed Frank Lampard to turn things around at Everton but believes he should first get to the bottom of what happened with Rafa Benitez.
The Spaniard was sacked in January, just six-and-a-half months after taking charge, with the former Liverpool boss failing to win over the fans.
It seems he wasn’t too popular with the players either with his biggest decision being to drop Lucas Digne and then sell him to Aston Villa.
Lampard hasn’t managed since getting the sack from Chelsea in January last year but former Blues defender Johnson feels it’s a good appointment.
‘I think they’ll [the fans] be happy,’ Johnson told Metro.co.uk in an interview courtesy of Squawka.
‘I’m quite surprised how it didn’t really work out with Rafa to be honest, I thought they were really going to kick on because the club was in a good position.
‘They’ve got a good squad and signed some really good players, I thought Rafa would really have a field day there and to be fair they did at the start, they looked great.
‘Similar to [Steven] Gerrard, Lamps will get them playing, they’ll enjoy working for him so hopefully he can get that little bit extra out of them and it will be happy times there again and they can get back up the league where they should really be.
‘I’d like to find out why… I don’t know whether they all fell out with Rafa or what but they’re good players so as long as they’re enjoying their football then that should be showing on the pitch.
‘But for whatever reason it wasn’t so if I was Lamps I’d be keen to find out why and then just get them working hard together and enjoying their football and the results will follow.’
