‘I trust him, but protocols are important’

Rafael Nadal has shared his perspective on Jannik Sinner’s suspension following a doping-related ruling by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The 22-time Major winner expressed his belief in the Italian’s integrity, highlighting his moral and ethic.

However, Nadal also emphasized the importance of respecting established protocols in professional tennis. Jannik accepted a three-month suspension as a part of a settlement with WADA despite never knowingly took a banned substance.

Rafa believes in Jannik’s statement. However, the Spaniard carefully underlined his respect for the procedures and legal frameworks in place.

Rather than question the decision outright, Rafa pointed to the importance of constructive reform that would lead to the more transparent acting and fewer controversies. In March last year, Jannik failed two doping tests, with clostebol found in his body.

His fitness trainer, Giacomo Naldi, used a banned spray to treat a cut on his hand. He then inadvertently transferred it to Sinner after giving him a massage without gloves. The ITAI determined Sinner bore no fault of negligence, and he continued his season.

However, WADA stepped onto the scene and brought his case to spotlight again. In the meanwhile, Sinner focused on his on-court duties and wrapped up the 2024 campaign with an impressive 73-6 score. The Italian defended the Australian Open crown this January.

Instead of waiting until April to start a potentially extended trial, Jannik made an agreement with WADA and accepted a three-month suspension between February and May. World no. 1 missed four Masters 1000 events but kept his advantage over Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz.
