Igor Shesterkin slams the door on the Leafs

It was quite the evening on Monday as an American team finally was able to come to the Scotiabank Arena for the first time in the regular season since March 2020 as the New York Rangers crossed the border and entered Canada. Toronto had played 66 straight games since they were eliminated by Columbus in the play-in games for the 2020 playoffs.
NEW YORK RANGERS 2 TORONTO 1 (OVERTIME)
Artemi Panarin finished a wild overtime when he whipped a shot into the top corner, far side, to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 win over Toronto.
It was an exciting overtime with chances galore on both sides as both Igor Shesterkin and Jack Campbell were amazing in goal. It made up for a relatively boring opening 60 minutes in which Toronto outplayed the Rangers but could not get the puck past Shesterkin.
The Rangers opened the scoring in the first period when Mika Zibanejad scored from the slot. It was thought that the puck hit both the post and the crossbar and was waved off by the referee, but upon review, the puck did go off the post and then hit the camera inside the net, for a good goal. It was Zibanejad’s first of the season.
The Leafs tied it in the second when Michael Bunting seemed to ‘bunt’ it into the net after Morgan Rielly put the puck in front of the net.
The Leafs dominated most of the game and outshot New York 38-19 during regulation including 17-2 in the second period.
The Rangers outshot Toronto 4-3 in the wild overtime.
Shesterkin stole the game for New York as he turned aside 40-of-41 shots to improve to 2-0-1. He has given up five goals on 99 shots and is showing the hockey world that he is a top-five goaltender in the NHL.
Campbell made 21 saves in taking the overtime loss. He is also 2-0-1 and has given up four goals on 86 shots.
