Feliciano Lopez will retire at the Queen’s Club if the tournament organizers grant him a main draw wildcard. Lopez, 41, is planning to retire from pro tennis in 2023. Lopez, who hasn’t appeared in any tournaments so far in 2023, is playing in a selected number of tournaments this year.

Next week, Lopez will play his first tournament of the season in Acapulco. Lopez is also planning to compete on the clay courts of Barcelona and the grass courts of Mallorca, respectively. At the Queen’s Club, Lopez is a three-time finalist and has two titles there, having won the tournament in 2017 and 2019.

“Acapulco, Barcelona and Mallorca are confirmed. I have asked for a wildcard for Queens. If they give it to me, my last tournament will be there,” Lopez told Marca.

Lopez: I wanted my career to come to an end on the court

Lopez, who turned pro in 1997, wants his retirement to come on a tennis court and not via a press conference.

“Yes, it was always clear to me that I wanted to retire playing. Last year I realized that it was time and I made the decision. And I wanted to do it like that as long as it was okay,” Lopez explained. Last year, Lopez and Stefanos Tsitsipas won the Acapulco doubles title.

There, Lopez and Tstsipas bonded a little. When asked if he would be interested in coaching Tsitsipas one day, Lopez said there are no immediate plans to coach anyone but also didn’t rule out the possibility of one day coaching the Greek or any other player.

“In the short or medium term, I don’t know if I see myself being someone’s coach, really. It’s not something I’m considering right now. If the opportunity to train someone arises, it should be valued because I love tennis. And being able to provide any player with my help and my experience, well great. I do not rule out,” Lopez said.
