Why did Cathy Kelley return to WWE?

The changes seen in the WWE in recent months have not only affected the wrestlers on the main roster but also ringside commentators and reporters, as well as executives. A few weeks ago we brought you the news regarding some changes, such as the departure of Jimmy Smith, the promotion of Wade Barrett to the SmackDown comment table and finally the return of Cathy Kelley as a reporter for RAW.

The young Illinois journalist left the company to debut in the Netflix sitcom #blackAF, after being a correspondent for NXT for 4 years and finally, in the final period of her contract, in the Main Roster. Now, however, WWE itself has formalized her return in early October as a RAW backstage interviewer.

Cathy Kelley was close to AEW

Still, Cathy Kelley was not immediately convinced to return to the Stamford federation. In fact, according to Fightful’s Sean Sapp, AEW had taken an interest in her a priori, before WWE came to talk to her.

According to the well-known wrestling site, Tony Khan himself wanted to talk face to face with Kelley, to talk about the possibility of working for him. Sean Sapp in fact explained how she really went: “Cathy Kelley signed for WWE, she has been an official for some time now, she is now an interviewer in the backstage of RAW.

Some sources, however, have told me how All Elite Wrestling contacted Cathy in a stubborn way earlier this year, having then obtained more dialogue than usual, to be just a simple conversation. They also told us that Tony Khan showed up several times to talk, with her directly, about the possibility of working in the same environment; things looked promising.

However, as it is easy to understand, things did not go as expected. We do not know why this happened, what the real reason for this interruption of dialogue between the two is or how far the talks actually went. But now Cathy Kelley is part of the WWE and Tony will have to look for a new person.”

On this week’s episode of NXT, Mandy Rose returned to WWE programming…
