Islam Makhachev Picks Michael Morales Over Ian Garry

Islam Makhachev’s welterweight title defense is right around the corner; many names are tossed up to serve the role of a title challenger, but the 170-pound champion is only interested in locking horns with deserving contenders. Initially he wanted Kamaru Usman but now he seems to be okay with fighting Michael Morales next.
‘Legacy’ matters a lot to Islam Makhachev and he’s only interested in entertaining fights that add value to his glorious career. Since Morales is unbeaten and has proven himself against credible opponents, the champion is leaning more in his favor.
In a recent interview, the UFC welterweight champion revealed whom he would prefer to face in his first title defense in the new division. Kamaru Usman appears to be out of the conversation, despite both fighters previously showing strong interest in that match up. Several reports and rumors suggest Islam Makhachev could return in August.
“If I had to choose between them for my legacy, I would pick Morales because he is still undefeated. If I beat Ian Garry, some people will say, ‘Shavkat already beat him a few months ago.’”
UFC matchmakers now face an intriguing decision, as fans remain surprised by the emergence of new contenders in the 170-pound division.
Islam Makhachev is highly expected to fight in august – the opponent remains to be a mystery for now and the super fight against Ilia Topuria is temporarily off the list after his shocking setback against Justin Gaethje.
