‘I thought he would risk the biscuit more’: Israel Adesanya’s coach admits surprise at Robert Whittaker’s lack of aggression and claims anyone who scored UFC 271 clash for challenger is ‘teetering on not being intelligent’

Israel Adesanya’s coach was surprised at how low Robert Whittaker’s appetite for risk was in the UFC 271 main event. 

Eugene Bareman, the mastermind behind much of Adesanya’s work, cornered his man en route to yet another middleweight title defence on Saturday night. 

Whittaker was slightly surprised the judges did not rule in his favour and some fans online also scored the contest for the challenger.

Bareman was unequivocal in saying those arguments bordered on idiocy, telling the MMA Hour: ‘I might have a bias, but I think 4-1’s a good assessment. 

‘At a stretch, I don’t see it, but 3-2. To give Robert the fight, you’re going into a space where you’re teetering with just not being intelligent. 

‘Me and Israel and the coaching team predicted that he would wait a lot more. We basically thought it would be a more even mix of him having spurts of aggression and waiting. 

‘And it was exactly that, instead of last time, he was maybe all a lot of aggression and pushing forward.
